Case Studies, in the way we are using them here, are a bit like parables. Better case studies are multi-layered and dimensional, laying out a real-world type situation (though it may be fictional) from which students can learn and develop new approaches to problems. Case studies play an important part in PBL--problem-based learning--allowing students to problematize issues in their field before being confronted by these issues in the real world.
